4. Space

Starting to create your own home gym you may see that space is never enough, especially if you use treadmill or a multigym. Before buying equipment think how much space can you utilize for installing it and then choose the units according to this decision. For example, treadmills will occupy about 30 square ft, single station gym - 35 square ft, bikes – 10 square ft, free weights – 20-50 square ft, rowing machines – 20 square ft, steppers – 10-20 square ft, ski machines – 25 square ft. The multi-station gym will occupy 50-200 square ft.

Try to save some space by choosing a rack of dumbbells instead of a huge weight machine. Also consider the height of your ceiling, does it allow to attach some equipment to it?

Consider if your neighbors (especially if you live in apartment in a multi-storey building) won’t object to the sounds of your jumping up and down.

And, finally, determine whether your home gym will be used for other purposes, like family gatherings, kids playing etc. If yes, try to include these purposes in planning your home gym creation.

5. Features and Design

Prior to buying equipment check out if it is safe, examine its design and additional features. Pieces of equipment should be adjustable, easy in learning and usage. It parts or components should be easily removed and replaced. Movable parts should be fixed well. Design flaws or weaknesses are dangerous, so don’t buy the unit if you see them.
