How does Heart Rate Control Work with an Elliptical Trainer?
You need to program the desired heart rate, the wireless strap will monitor your heart and then feed the results to the machine. In case, if your rate drops, the machine increases the resistance level and vice verse. Some machines may include an interval HRC program. This program can change the resistance level thus giving you the opportunity to train in different zones. It is similar to the hill training programs on treadmills.

Wireless heart rate control is up to individual preference. The most important is that your elliptical machine had it. Some users like to control their workouts manually and isntinctively know the comfortable level for them.

If you are just starting to get back into exercising you should look for a machine with HRC. Consult with your doctor and/or a personal trainer in order to select the ideal exercise level defined by your heart rate. This will also help you determine your goals and criteria for increasing your level of exertion.

If you are a professional athlete, then HRC is necesary for reaching maximum results especially during interval training.

Some exercise machines offer heart rate control through stationary handgrips or by ear clip. HRC through handgrips is aimed at getting an upper body workout, since you can't use the moveable handlebars. And the ear clip HRC is not very convenient. Nobody wants to exercise with a clip on the ear.

The most useful type of HRC is through a wireless chest strap.

Most fitness equipment manufacturers have two similar elliptical machines with the only difference - being with or without wireless heart rate control. The variation in price is usually $200-$300  and more. Some models can also include wireless HRC telemetry, but charge additionally for the strap.
